Our basic three-hour kayaking class will teach you what you need to know to buy or rent a sea kayak and get the maximum of SAFE enjoyment from the boat. We start with the basic elements (how to properly get into a kayak, the forward paddle stroke, steering techniques) and build out from there to include bracing techniques, and rescue techniques using a paddling partner, then a solo rescue using a paddle-float.

The class includes all equipment; just bring a dry change of clothes and any personal effects (water, hat, etc), and we'll take care of the rest. Classes are scheduled for Friday nights in summer, with other nights available if you are booking for a group of 3 to 6 paddlers. Fee is $75 per person.

Advanced paddlers wanting to paddle deep water should consider our Eskimo rolling class. We'll start on land with the basic set-up positioning and dryland rolling, then move you out into deeper water to work through the process in the Reality-Based water. Classes are scheduled for Sunday Mornings Fee is $50 per person including equipment (though you're welcome to bring your own if you prefer).

Both classes are taught on Big Bear Lake, a quietwater lake just a mile west of our store in Vernon Hills. Meet at the store, then we'll caravan over to the lake and get the classes going.

We're located in RIVER TREE COURT, a mall in Vernon Hills, 35 miles north of downtown Chicago. From Chicago or Wisconsin, take I-94 to the Route 60 exit (Town Line Road), and get off going westbound. We're 1.75 miles west of I-94 on Rt 60, right next to the Rt 60 Canoe Launch on the Des Plaines River. For a detailed map, click here.

If you're looking to get out on the water but don't want the hassle of loading up a boat and trying to search for a place to put in, our on-water Rentals are ideal. We're located just a stone's throw from the Route 60 Canoe Launch on the DesPlaines River - pick up your boat, wheel it across the driveway, and you're good to go (note that our rental boats can ONLY be used at the launch adjacent to our store; cartopping to other locations isn't permitted).

Rentals start late April and continue through late November. We have a combination of tandem canoes from 14 to 17 feet, and tandem and solo kayaks. Reservations are highly recommended, especially on summer weekends.

Rates for either a canoe or a kayak is $45 per day, per boat , including paddles and lifejackets ($3 per day for additional lifejackets). You can arrange to pickup or drop off your rental before or after the store closes or on Sundays, when we're closed; just call us ahead of time to make arrangements to stop by the day before and pick up a key.To reserve your boat, please call us at 847/362-4880.
